Description

Reprint of Milo Bird’s accounts of growing up in the mining town of Melones, now under the waters of the New Melones Reservoir. He was born in 1895, and in his youth became a self-styled Tom Sawyer. He recalls miner’s working conditions, residents, ghosts, and how young boys amused themselves in an isolated mining town. He worked in the nearby Carson Hill Mine and later attended Stanford University. His writing style brings to life his recollections of the early part of the 20th century. Paperback. Tuolumne County Historical Society. Sonora, California. 1985. Reprint 2008. 284 pages. ISBN 0965260887.
