Groveland’s own Carlo M. De Ferrari is the author of a new book about his hometown, the South of the River region of Tuolumne County, and his family which has such deep roots in the area. The De Ferrari Family– Memories of Times Past is available for purchase.
The book is the first publishing venture of Tuolumne Heritage Publications, Inc., a nonprofit corporation formed in January 2011 to issue fine quality books on local history. Its board of directors consists of three residents of Sonora: Bill Coffill, a local attorney; Louise Steuben, librarian at Sonora Elementary School, and Sharon Marovich, a local historian with publishing experience.
Carlo’s book tops out at 500 pages interspersed with 450 photographs, some quite rare and never before published. It is a large format, hard cover book with dust jacket.
Carlo spent the last five years putting together this important contribution to local history, researching his De Ferrari roots all the way back to 11th century Italy and his mother’s Scotch/Irish ancestors to the East Coast in the early 1700s. This entertaining and informative genealogy highlights interesting members of his family and how and why they made their way West, eventually winding up in California’s gold fields.
In the thirteen chapters Carlo covers the Roaring Twenties in Groveland when the town was wide open and full of Hetch Hetchy employees and the vast water and electrical project’s headquarters and railroad. The Great Depression years were a difficult time for local families and businesses, but there seemed to be something interesting going on in town and work to be done on the area’s many ranches.
