Sonny Hendricks will give a history of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians at the Thursday, June 14 meeting of the Tuolumne County Historical Society. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the Community Room at the Tuolumne County Library on Greenley Rd. in Sonora.

Hendricks is an elder of the tribe and former tribal chairman.  The tribe celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Tuolumne Rancheria in 2011.  Hendricks is a descendant of Alec Thompson family, one of the original families of the rancheria.

The local Me-Wuk were especially impacted by the Gold Rush when miners arrived in the area searching for gold.  Without regard for the native peoples, the miners disrupted and rerouted stream channels, blasted away hillsides, destroyed fish habitat and shot game animals to feed the increasing population.  Entire Me-Wuk villages were displaced when ranchers brought in cattle which damaged plants and ate the acorns, a major food source for the Me-Wuk.

Liquor, as well as diseases like measles and smallpox, were further detriments to the native population.  By the 1870’s the California Indian populations, including the local Me-Wuks, had been reduced by 80 to 90 per cent.

To earn a living the Me-Wuks integrated into the community life of the settlements of Summersville, Carters and finally Tuolumne.  They worked at cattle ranches and some of the local mines and businesses, as household and ranch laborers and when the West Side Lumber Co. opened at both the mill and on the railroad.

When the mill closed in 1961, the Me-Wuk Tribe, along with the rest of the Tuolumne community, experienced high levels of unemployment.  Living conditions on the Rancheria were grim.  It took the tribe more than 30 years to recover.  But while their economy suffered, the tribe experienced a spiritual and cultural renewal.

In 1965, Indian people from throughout California came together to help rebuild the traditional roundhouse which serves as the spiritual center of the Tuolumne Me-Wuk.
